This month is a great time to reflect on what we are thankful for. A supportive family, present friendships, career stability, and a safe home are all examples of what we may be grateful for in this season of life. But we can admit, there are times we don’t have as many blessings to count. In a fallen world, it is bound to happen that someone or something will let us down.
What can we be thankful for when life hands us disappointment? There is something greater that is perfect and surpasses the temporary highs and lows we experience on this earth. I will boldly say it: I am talking about the gospel of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.
“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.” Habakkuk 3:17-18
When it feels like evil has won, Christ is still king. When my shortcomings are evident, I have gratitude for my Savior who is there for me. When life doesn’t go my way, the gospel still holds true.
Our thankfulness doesn’t have to depend on how life is going, what people do, or what circumstances look like. Our gratitude can be rooted in Jesus because He remains faithful, unchanging, and enough to satisfy our souls.
